FAQs

This requires caution and testing. Never apply a water-based sealer over an existing solvent-based sealer, as they are chemically incompatible and will not adhere correctly. If the existing sealant is peeling, cracking, or hazy, it must be completely removed with a specialized stripper before a new coat can be applied. If the old sealer is mostly gone but not peeling, a simple test patch is highly recommended to ensure proper adhesion and appearance.

The reapplication frequency depends on the sealer type, traffic, and climate. Generally:

Surface (Film-Forming) Sealers: Every 2–3 years.

Penetrating (Invisible) Sealers: Every 3–5 years or longer.

The simplest test is to pour a small amount of water on the surface. If the water beads up, the seal is intact. If the water soaks in and darkens the material, it is time to thoroughly clean and reapply the sealer.

For wide-joint applications (typically anything over 3/4 up to 2), you should use a high-performance polymeric sand or a dedicated jointing compound formulated specifically for wide, non-uniform joints. These products often have larger aggregate sizes and stronger binders (such as NextGel™ technology) to ensure deep penetration and full hardening across the wide gap, providing the necessary stability without cracking.

For sealed surfaces, use a poultice—a paste made of a solvent (like mineral spirits or acetone) mixed with an absorbent material (like talc or baking soda). Apply the poultice over the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it sit for several hours or overnight. The solvent breaks down the oil, and the absorbent material draws it out of the pores. Avoid scrubbing aggressively with wire brushes, as this can damage the sealant and the stone surface.
