A French drain system needs a continuous downward slope to effectively move water. A general rule of thumb is that the drain should drop at least 1 percent (or 1/8 inch per foot) in depth for every 100 feet of length. This slight grade ensures gravity pulls the water through the pipe and toward the final discharge point.
